Waze is a new application to arrive on BlackBerry. It is free for anyone to use and the BlackBerry application is in beta stage. While some functions are missing from the beta, it is still a useful free turn by turn GPS application.
Waze also has foursquare and twitter plug-in to aggregate the social aspect of where you and your friends are. You can check in to venues for foursquare via this application.
Waze will allow you to navigate to any destination with spoken turn by turn directions and traffic alerts. Alerts include; accidents, slowdowns, speed traps, and red light cameras.
While its in beta, there are some bugs. Some BlackBerry phone have issue running the application. I also found the GPS directions not to be optimal and sometimes taking me way out of my way to a destination. However, Waze is built on users and as more people use Waze, it will become more effective. Besides that, there are few GPS applications that offer voice navigation for free.
Available for most newer BlackBerry phone here at m.waze.com . You will need to create a Waze account.
Waze also offers an online dashboard at waze.com. Here it saves all your driving statisics and past routes. The various routes are available to download in .gpx file format which is really cool for those into GPS. A .gpx file can be used to sync photos to a latitude and longitude by way of the time stamp. Some photographers pay big money for standalone GPS devices that do this. You can also see these routes on Waze’s own online map utilities.
